On July 3, 2024, Land Rover released a set of official photos of its new Defender OCTA. The new car is the most powerful and versatile Defender model ever, raising the performance of the Defender 110 Defender to an unprecedented level.
The appearance of the new car is bolder, tougher and more distinctive than before. The vehicle's sitting position is higher and the posture is wider, and the more outward wheel arches make the whole vehicle majestic. The redesigned bumper improves the approach angle and departure angle of the vehicle to 40.2° and 42.8° respectively, and the solid underbody protection gives the driver confidence even when driving on rugged mountains. In addition, the maximum wading depth of this car is up to 1 meter, surpassing all previous DEFENDERs.
The new Defender Octa is named after the hardest and most popular natural mineral on earth - diamond. The octahedral shape gives diamond a unique look and durability, and also inspired the iconic pattern of the new Defender Octa, implying its rugged, eye-catching, rare and desirable qualities as the flagship model of the Defender. The new car is equipped with a newly designed diamond logo, which consists of a machined and sandblasted titanium disc with a bright black diamond pattern inlaid in the disc.
The new DEFENDER OCTA Edition One is the epitome of luxury for the new DEFENDER OCTA and will be the first to be launched in the first year of production. It features a rich configuration, an exclusive new Faro Green paint colour, Khaki and Ebony UltrafabricsTM PU and seamless interior trim, new carbon fibre cut trim and 20-inch forged alloy wheels with a choice of all-terrain tyres or specially developed premium all-terrain tyres.
The new DEFENDER OCTA brings an unprecedented excellent performance experience to the DEFENDER. The new car is equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbocharged gasoline engine equipped with mild hybrid technology, matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission with high and low speed gears. It is the most extreme and powerful DEFENDER ever. After being equipped with 22-inch light alloy wheels and all-season tires, its speed can reach 250 km/h.
The new car has a maximum torque of 750 Nm (800 Nm when dynamic start mode is selected), a peak torque speed range from 1800 rpm to nearly 6000 rpm, and an acceleration time of 0-100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds. At the same time, through careful tuning, the vehicle can cope with all terrains and provide an excellent driving experience.
The dynamic performance of the new DEFENDER OCTA exceeds that of all previous DEFENDERs. It adopts the 6D intelligent dynamic chassis with hydraulic interconnected dampers, which is first installed on the new Range Rover Sport SV Edition One Limited Edition, and optimizes the hardware and geometry to make the vehicle fun both on the road and off-road.
The 6D intelligent dynamic chassis is equipped with advanced hydraulic interconnected dampers, coupled with continuously variable semi-active shock absorbers, which can effectively control the pitch and roll state of the vehicle, bringing excellent comfort and refinement. On rough terrain, the 6D intelligent dynamic chassis can achieve greater wheel articulation, effectively cope with extreme obstacles, and make customers' adventures more comfortable and easy.
The new Defender OCTA is 28mm taller and 68mm wider, giving it superior ground clearance and stability. To ensure it can handle any terrain with ease, the new car is equipped with optimized suspension components, including longer and stronger wishbones, and unique active dampers with separate accumulators to further reduce roll on the road. It is also equipped with Brembo calipers and upgraded 400mm front brake discs, and has the fastest steering ratio in the Defender to date, with timely and precise dynamic response.
As it entered a higher performance area that had never been explored before, the engineering department tailored a series of testing and development plans for the new Defender OCTA, including more than 13,960 additional tests including high-speed off-road and highway durability tests.
The new Defender OCTA can automatically detect the road surface it is driving on and optimize dynamic settings accordingly. In addition to the default comfort mode, the performance-focused dynamic mode also provides the ultimate road experience. Simply press the transparent logo button on the steering wheel to adjust the vehicle's steering, throttle and suspension settings. Long press this button to turn on the new OCTA mode, which is the first off-road mode ever to focus on performance in the DEFENDER, ensuring the ultimate control experience. The OCTA mode can also enable the off-road start mode to achieve the best acceleration on soft roads; when used in combination with the lowest traction control setting (Trac DSC dynamic stability control system or DSC dynamic stability system is off), it can also enable a unique off-road ABS anti-lock braking system calibration to achieve the best braking performance on soft roads.
More professional off-road operations are completed through the DEFENDER's world-renowned Terrain Response® all-terrain feedback adaptation system. The system provides driving modes for sand, mud/ruts, grass/gravel/snow, and slow driving on large rocks/pebbles. At the same time, the new car is also equipped with off-road driving assistance systems, such as the innovative off-road view of high-definition ground images. The system can make the engine hood transparent, thereby expanding the visible range and allowing the driver to be confident when driving on rugged roads.
The new DEFENDER OCTA shows its off-road nature with a bold attitude: it is equipped with 33-inch tires, the largest size in the DEFENDER mass-produced model, including specially developed Goodyear advanced all-terrain tires; the body design has been optimized, and the wider wheel arches, combined with the unique front face air intake grille design, make the airflow under the engine hood greater; the new rear bumper integrates a four-outlet active exhaust system, and the solid underbody protection includes a graphite-surface aluminum alloy front underguard and uncovered phosphor bronze-coated front and rear rescue eyes.
The new car comes with two exclusive new premium metallic paint color schemes: Petra Copper and Faro Green, as well as Carpathian Gray and Charente Gray. The new color scheme is paired with the standard Narvik Black roof and tailgate to highlight its distinctive personality. The vehicle also offers an optional matte protective film to protect the body in harsh environments and increase the sophistication and recognition of the appearance. At the same time, the new car's unique optional accessories enhance its design and performance, including dual raised air intakes and a winch installation kit for extreme off-road adventures.
The new DEFENDER OCTA Edition One is equipped with exclusive Faro Green body paint and carbon fiber cut decoration made from recycled raw materials. Carbon fiber cut decoration is used on the DEFENDER logo on the hood, around the fender vents, around the hood vents, and on the front seat backs and center console interior.
The interior of the new DEFENDER OCTA is unique, offering two highly durable UltrafabricsTM PU for customers to choose from, which is 30% lighter than traditional leather. The new DEFENDER OCTA Edition One comes standard with UltrafabricsTM PU material seats, with knitted fabric and seamless surface treatment, available in khaki and ebony colors. The standard interior of the new DEFENDER OCTA is a new dark brown semi-aniline leather with ebony KvadratTM fabric trim. In addition, all new cars can be specified with thin cloud and moonlight UltrafabricsTM PU or ebony semi-aniline leather.
The front row of the new DEFENDER OCTA is equipped with a new high-performance seat with strong support and integrated headrest, making it more comfortable to ride. At the same time, the new car is equipped with soul seats for the first time to create an immersive sensory experience. The soul seats were jointly developed by DEFENDER, music industry experts SUBPAC and Coventry University, allowing the driver and front passengers to feel the rhythm and beat of the music while listening to beautiful music. In addition, the new car also provides six special track modes, which can relieve passengers' anxiety or improve their cognitive responses by affecting their heart rate changes.
